Interior Design Lighting Specialists Costa del Sol – The Importance of Light

It does not matter how great your design is or how innovative or avant garde you strive to be, if your lighting isn’t right, the project fails.

There is no way around this subject, light can be the be all and end all of a great design project.

Even to a layman, bad lighting is obvious. Great lighting may not be. Lighting can change the mood of a room, make it look bigger, make spaces more interesting and homely.

Did you know, for example, that there are three types of lighting used in the basic interior design of your home?

  1. Ambient (Basic)
  2. Task
  3. Accent

Ambient Lighting (Basic)

Ambient Lighting illuminates spaces. Basic lighting is just what it sounds like; lighting that allows you to go from room to room or space to space and see where you are going and what is contained within those spaces.

This is accomplished in many ways, with, for example; chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights and with lanterns mounted on the outside of the home.

Fundamental to any room or space is a general light source. Its as simple as that.

Task Lighting

When you go to bed to read a book, your bedside lamp is “task lighting” because it helps you to perform a task. Desk lamps, recessed lighting, spot lamps and, come to think of it, even the humble torch is a task light.

This type of lighting helps you to do things, such as read, sew, play games, hobbies and any number of things that you would need an individual light source for.

Task lighting should be free from glare or shadows and bright enough for you to see comfortably without squinting or straining your eyes.

Accent Lighting

You have seen accent lighting many times without actually knowing what is called.

Consider an art gallery or restaurant, the light that shines on paintings and photographs, that’s accent lighting. It is light that draws the eye to a fixture, picture, ornament or a feature.

Accent lighting needs to be concentrated on the focal point and be at least three times stronger than the basic or ambient lighting.

Setting the mood, highlighting textures, focusing on a point of interest, this is the aim of task lighting.

Lighting Specialists

That is the basics and I really mean “basics”. We could all come up with our own lighting scheme and it may not look half bad. But, what if you don’t want “half bad”?

In business as in your own home, the light you reflect, reflects on you in more ways than one. making an impression is just as important in business as it is in your own home.
